Described below is a sample workflow for a variable print marketing application:
- A marketing plan is developed using a database of variable information.
- The exact records that are necessary for the application are extracted from the database.
- The graphic designer creates the layout for the project and designs it to accommodate the changing lengths of variable text that must fit within the different areas and to accommodate the variable images that will be used.
- Visible fields are created for the variable text and images and are tested with the longest and shortest entries from the database to make sure that the layout will work for all entries in the database.
- All files related to the job including the layout, images, fonts, and database records, are stored on a removable storage medium. Copies of the files are transferred electronically to the printer or the files stored on the removable media are sent via mail.
- A preflight check is performed by the printer to ensure that all of the necessary elements have been included with the job.
- A sample of the base document is printed on a digital press and is given to the client as a proof for approval.
- After the base document has been approved, the entire job is sent through the RIP and to the press where the documents are printed with all of the records in the database.
- After the job has been printed, it is setup for finishing processes such as folding and binding. Finishing operations are performed off-line or can be performed on-line with some press models.
- If any documents are damaged during the finishing process, the missing records are reprinted.
- The job is inspected, packaged, and shipped.
