A type of book publishing method associated with self-publishing, specifically for books printed with digital equipment and produced only when needed. “Books on Demand” (BOD) is basically the same as “Print on Demand,” except that the concept applies specifically to books. First time authors who are interested in getting their work published quickly (however on a limited basis and for a fee) without going through the necessary steps of traditional book publishing, find BOD publishing to be an attractive alternative. Digital presses are very useful for books on demand publishing. Soft-cover books, stapled booklets, and annual reports can be easily printed and finished. Color is also being added much more often because of the ease in changing content and the elimination of lengthy makeready times that are commonplace with conventional color printing. BOD is beneficial to traditional publishing houses for printing specialty books that are not expected to sell in great quantities. The books can be printed in small numbers on digital equipment when the demand dictates. It becomes less cost effective to print very large quantities of books on digital equipment; therefore, traditional printing processes are usually the best option in these cases.
