The illegal practice of sending an email to a consumer in an attempt to steal personal information without raising the suspicion of the consumer. The email often directs the consumer to a bogus website, usually via a link within the email, where the user is instructed to verify personal information such as a credit card number, a bank account number, a social security number, or various passwords. The email and the website may appear to be from a legitimate enterprise; however, the website is simply a copy of the legitimate site. No legitimate enterprise would ever contact a consumer in such a manner and none of them would ever ask a customer to verify personal information without the customer initiating a transaction on the company’s secure website.
