The simplest form of variable data publishing (VDP), which allows several versions of the same basic application to be created without the extensive use of a database. Documents may include photographs and graphics that change for a specific audience, but the basic format of the document remains the same for all of the target audiences. Various groups are basically receiving a different version of the same document. With versioning, the sizes of the different articles and different photographs and graphics for every version of a document are the same on every version in order to fit correctly into the identical areas of the layout. For example, when creating different versions of a newsletter, it is possible that every customer would receive a different newsletter, depending on the number of elements that are changed; however, the basic layout of the elements remains the same on all of the newsletters. Typically, a small number of different versions of a document are produced based on the requirements of several audience groups. The same newsletter produced in several different languages is an example of such document. Besides newsletters, other products that are often printed using versioning techniques are manuals, booklets, brochures, and training pieces.
