Absorbency
|
|
The property of paper to attract moisture. Most paper varieties attract moisture to some degree. This level of absorption is often affected by environmental factors such as humidity and temperature, but it is also affected by the types of moisture containing products used to produce a printed page. Conventional printing presses often use wetting agents that keep the non-image areas of printing plates free of ink. These wetting agents, if improperly balanced, can be readily absorbed by paper, which may cause a number of adverse reactions during the printing process, affecting the quality of the finished product. Paper used for digitally printed applications must be able to maintain its stability when subjected to water-based inks and toners; therefore, paper grades have been designed to absorb more of the moisture without changing the surface characteristics of the paper.
