Basis Weight (Paper)
The weight in pounds of 500 sheets of paper that has been cut to that paper's standard basic size. The basic size of bond paper, for example, is 17 x 22 inches. If 500 sheets (a ream) of bond paper is cut to its basic size of 17 x 22 inches and weighs 20 pounds, it is classified as 20 lb. bond. If a 17 x 22" ream of bond paper weighs 24 pounds, it is called 24 lb. bond, and so on. Basis weight is also referred to as substance weight.
